Back to the College Football Uniforms
The world’s leading athletic brand has handed the Commodores a fresh-look in the tradition-heavy SEC. In 2011, Vandy donned its first black helmet since 1990 and last season, a white alternate shell was added to the mix adorned with the recognizable star logo.
The Commodores’ updated uniforms were a welcomed gift for a program in need of an overhaul mired in mediocrity. A perennial bottom-dweller in the Eastern Division, Vandy is coming off its best season in almost 100 years, finishing at 9-4 on a seven-game winning streak. Head coach James Franklin has re-energized a fanbase and with that, increased Vandy’s uniform appeal.
Vandy’s 2012 alternate gold jersey has black shoulders with black numbers outlined in white on gold sleeves. For the first time since 1994,”Vanderbilt” will be displayed on the front of the jerseys. Like most Nike schools an inspirational motto is stitched along the inside neckline – “Anchor Down” – for the Commodores. Unlike previous years, Vandy’s star patch on game pants is displayed on both hips. The gold helmet-gold jersey-black pants look was worn often during Jay Cutler’s career in Nashville.
Beginning last fall, Vandy’s stylized anchor logo replaced the capitalized “V” on the crest of all jerseys. Since 1965, Vandy has worn 16 different helmets with the wildest coming during the 1984 and 1985 seasons. The traditional metallic gold shell was the canvas for a “V” decal that had a star attached, not behind. Vanderbilt’s entire school name has been stretched across gold shells twice, first from 1979-83 and most recently 1999-01.
The Commodores’ most popular look has been its current home gold shell with a solid white and two black stripes from front to back.
