Back to the College Football Uniforms
Since becoming an Under Armour school in 2008, Utah’s gameday garb has seen a pleasant upgrade from Nike’s boring looks in the past. In recent years, the Utes have worn everything from “Wounded Warrior” red camouflage get ups to an all-black alternate combination in 2012.
Matte black helmets were incorporated into the current red shell choices that same season. During Under Armour’s first season as Utah’s supplier, the Utes experimented with early 2000 Oregon-style numerals but reverted back to block numbers three years later.
Utah’s feathered “U” logo encased in a circle has been around since 1975. The size and style of the “U” has been altered on occasion, but red shells with white facemasks have been worn for several decades. The Utes often wear all-red at home, but didn’t debut the combination until 1992.
Prior to red pants joining the fray, white with red stripes was the only choice on gameday during the 70s and 80s.
Black was added as a third color in 1984 and adorned the white pants. Black was featured several years later in the early 2000s along the rib cage and neckline of jerseys. Utah’s current pants feature a nifty “thermopattern” along the thighs while tops have slimmer piping in multiple colors. When the Utes haven’t donned black pants at home, they’ve worn them on the road with white jerseys decorated with red numerals.
Utah’s current five-year deal with Under Armour ends fall 2013. The Utes had a Nike contract under Urban Meyer in the early 2000s.
