Back to the College Football Uniforms
Under Armour hasn’t made a mockery of Texas Tech’s gameday garb, instead giving the Big XII program a slew of choices that aren’t as risky the flagship university in College Park, Ma.
Since 2000, Texas Tech’s helmet of choice has been its black shell with an embossed scarlet “TT” logo. After a 36-year hiatus, white helmets returned to the mix in 2010. The Red Raiders went with the “TT” logo in 1963 and updated it with a more three-dimensional look 47 years later. The school’s current black facemasks debuted in 1984, replacing scarlet facemasks that lasted 10 seasons.
For the first time in school history in 2012, Texas Tech wore reflective black shells with contrasting decals on each side against Texas. The “Lone Star” helmet featured a red, white and blue star on one side with the current “TT” logo overlapping the state of Texas on the other. The uniforms were designed after the state flag with stars and stripes accents on the shoulders, pants, socks and cleats.
At home during the Under Armour years, Texas Tech prefers black and has an all-scarlet alternate that rivals Cincinnati’s bright red get up with Adidas. On the road, the Red Raiders have three different pants colors with a white top. In the early to mid 2000s, wide-striped jerseys and pants created a modern look on gameday. Under Armour has since simplified its first Texas Tech uniforms from those years with thinner lines resulting in a cleaner appearance.
While Texas Tech often mixes and matches scarlet, white and black tops and pants, the Red Raiders have yet to wear scarlet helmets. Since the start of the 2010 season, Texas Tech has worn seven different helmets. A metallic silver shell – an ode to a similar helmet worn in 1960 – is rumored to return in the near future.
Texas Tech’s current five-year contract with Under Armour runs out in 2014. Before teaming up with Kevin Plank at Under Armour, the Red Raiders were Nike sponsored.
