Back to the College Football Uniforms
Upon ending a relationship with Nike and signing on with Adidas in 2011, Rice found it necessary to update it look on the gridiron.
Hardly anyone noticed.
Wordmarks and numbers decreased in size, but that was it. Rice’s navy home uniforms remained the same as well as its popular white on navy road get up. The Owls have preferred basic uniform designs for several years now and still have screen-printed numerals and jersey graphics.
The program’s “RICE” wordmark at the crest has remained in place throughout during the last decade. In the mid 2000s, Rice’s swoosh-sponsored uniforms had originality with heavy silver accents and striped pants. In 2006 however, during the Owls initial partnership with a Adidas, Rice’s gameday apparel was a disaster after the three stripes’ decision to incorporate hints of gold into their color scheme. Gold outline around numerals and wordmarks appeared out of place without reason.
Prior to deals with Nike and Adidas over the last decade, the Owls were sponsored by Russell Athletic.
Over the last few seasons, the Owls have donned at least six different helmets, all with differing versions of the program’s primary stylized “R” sticker that made its debut on shells in 2007. Rice has worn navy shells every season except one — 2006 — since 1990.
