Back to the College Football Uniforms
Old gold and black is most commonly referenced at Wake Forest and Vanderbilt, but Idaho’s interpretation of the combo on its football uniforms could be the most unique.
Prior to the start of the 2012 season, Nike provided the Vandals with a team specific alternate white road jersey, one that’s a completely different design from the threads worn at home. On Idaho’s updated white road top, both shoulders are drenched in gold with black numerals and an “IDAHO” wordmark across the center.
The primary home black jersey yields a more simplistic design without contrasting shoulder colors. Numerals are gold outlined in white. Idaho’s 2013 black jersey is similar to what Nike first unveiled at the program in 2008 but with slightly different numerals and dri-fit materials. The sets back then mimicked the swoosh’s template at Army.
Idaho currently has three pants options — gold, black or white. Its alternate black pants feature two gold slashes that begin at the hip and stretch across the front thigh. Idaho often wears black pants with its new white road jersey, the coolest combination. Before the Vandals unveiled a black alternate helmet speckled in gold in 2012, Idaho had donned gold shells since 1995.
From 1978 to 1994, the Vandals’ helmets were bright yellow. A black shell with a gray facemask first appeared at the school in 1965 and lasted three seasons before taking its 45-year break. Idaho has worn three different logo decals on its new-and-improved black shells since their debut: the school’s primary “I” with “VANDALS” script, a stars and stripes version and a script oversized “VANDALS” wordmark without the “I”.
The oversized wordmark was used on helmets from 1995-2007 before making its return in 2010. Idaho has been with Nike since 2008 and during that season, player names appeared on the backs of jerseys for the first time in nine years.
