BYU Cougars Football Uniforms

Back to the College Football Uniforms

During the 1970s, royal blue uniforms made their debut at BYU, but navy returned as the official color – with gold accents – in 1999. Nike’s look during that season was horrific in retrospect, white jerseys with heavy navy shoulders and piping wrapped in gold-tan.

Yuck.

The swoosh dropped the awkward 50-50 jerseys that appeared to connect to game pants the following season for a more traditional navy and white get up from 2000-03.

BYU’s classic navy and white look in recent years is its best combination over the last decade, straying away from the unnecessary touches of gold. Sleeves stripes are back as well as stripes on pants. Sleeve stripes were indicative of BYU football during the Ty Detmer royal blue era in the 90s.

The Cougars’ most recent radical step outside the box came in 2012 when BYU unveiled an all-black get up against Oregon State, bringing back royal blue accents from the past to make the combination really pop. The matte black shell with a blue and white “Y” logo with corresponding stripes was the perfect lid.

Before the black tops and pants were added in 2012, BYU’s combinations included white and navy jerseys and the same for its pants. All-navy with white helmets is a popular alternate home look.

Since 2005, BYU has donned white shells with a navy stripe and navy “Y” logo used in some form since 1969. The Cougars wore navy helmets with a similar logo from 1999-2004. Royal blue, incorporated into a “throwback” uniform, is expected to make a return appearance in the near future.
