Not to be outdone by the football team, Minnesota’s basketball squad also got the Nike redesign treatment in 2012 when the swoosh introduced a new uniform style that included three different-colored sets and a classic wordmark.
Minnesota joined Nike’s trend of Aerographics with several added to the backs of jerseys including a likeness of Williams Arena, the school’s “M” primary logo and the year (1851) the university was established.
The Aerographics design is an innovative mesh process that made its debuted with Team USA at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Four other Big Ten teams also use Aerographics on the backs of uniforms — Ohio State, Michigan State, Illinois and Purdue.
Currently, the Golden Gophers have three different Nike uniform combinations — white at home, maroon on the road and gold alternates. Each set has contrasting team colors to complete the look with a “MINNESOTA” wordmark across the chest.
The Gophers’ alternate gold look resembles uniforms of the 1990s with a maroon collar. On Minnesota’s road maroon get up, the team’s gold wordmark and numerals are outlined in white and two gold stripes stretch from armpit to front knee.
Minnesota’s current gameday shorts are perforated on each side panel for a lighter, more ventilated feel with the school’s “M” logo in a contrasting color at the bottom.
