Western Michigan got the carbon fiber helmet treatment in 2012 to go along with a new black and gold alternate jersey drawn up by Adidas. All-black jersey and pants are accented in gold with drop-shadowed numbers giving the threads a retro vibe.
Riddell Speed helmets are coated in a carbon fiber-style metal design first used in small details on Western Michigan shells from 1998-2010. The Broncos debuted the new look in the 2012 season opener against Toledo.
Western Michigan’s a program that takes pride in its shoulder stripes, displaying them on each home and away set. Current options include a black jersey with white numerals and white and gold shoulder stripes as well as a white top with contrasting stripes.
Black pants are the preferred choice on gamedays but white and gold options are available. Western Michigan moved from brown shells to gold in 1998. From 1975-77, a bright yellow helmet was worn. In the early 2000s, Western Michigan’s Adidas threads were heavy on gold with wide accents that moved across the collarbone of jerseys.
When those front accents moved vertically across shoulders before 2010, the Broncos’ uniforms headed in the right direction. The Broncos recently unveiled new helmet logos for the 2013 season, defined by a large bronco ala Boise State’s alternates on one side with player numerals on the other.
The decals will replace the block “W” and bronco graphic that’s appeared since 2011. A uniform overhaul is said to be on the way from Adidas in the near future as well.
