Back to the College Football Uniforms
College football’s latest BCS buster saw its most recent makeover in 2010, an Adidas uniform featuring accent stripes on the front and back of jerseys leading to the collar.
Northern Illinois kept its “HUSKIES” wordmark, though much larger than in years past and introduced updated red and white tops with black pants. Reminiscent of Texas Tech’s on-field threads, the Huskies also updated their black helmets by adding red metallic flake for a modern look.
Prior to the uniform switch, Northern Illinois’ Adidas garb featured heavy contrasting side panels and vectors. During the 2012 season to commemorate the program’s first-ever BCS appearance, Northern Illinois a completely new design for the Orange Bowl — simple white tops with an “NIU” wordmark in red with silver numbers.
Simple red pants — worn for the first time ever at Northern Illinois — featured the school’s secondary husky graphic on the left hip. The Huskies have donned black shells with their “NIU” primary logo beneath the mascot since 2002. A red chrome shell with silver graphics would’ve been the perfect match during the 2012 season for the Huskies in Miami. In the 1980s, Northern Illinois donned red shells with white facemasks.
Northern Illinois has a strong bond with Adidas, utilizing the apparel giant as its main sponsor for the last decade. Black pants have been one of the Huskies’ sticking points under the three stripes brand.
