Back to the College Football Uniforms
Johnny Football’s snow whites. Is there a cleaner uniform in college football?
Texas A&M, with a new head coach and wide-eyed freshman quarterback, took the SEC by storm in 2012 with several interesting looks during redshirt freshman Johnny Manziel’s run to a Heisman Trophy.
The Aggies prominently displayed the three stripes on maroon and white tops with matte finishes on maroon and white helmets. Texas A&M donned the infamous all-white get up during a program-changing win at Alabama, one that pushed Manziel into the Heisman forefront.
Adidas’ own ‘Pro Combat’ interpretation was saved for an afternoon, nationally-televised contest at Mississippi State in 2012 when the Aggies donned black from helmet to cleats. With a new state of Texas A&M logo stretched across the helmet, the visitors rolled off more than 600 yards of offense in the no-huddle Air Raid. Numbers were displayed in stealth grey (known as smoke by Adidas) on the front of the black jersey with maroon stripes. Adidas called it A&M’s “Lone Star” uniform complete with Techfit pants and a matching compression base layer.
Adidas says the Techfit uniforms give the Aggies a more sleek and aerodynamic look.
During A&M’s Big XII career, the Aggies wore white helmets often in the 1970s but switched to maroon with white facemasks from 1979-98. From 1999-03, A&M made a subtle change, adding maroon facemasks to the maroon shell. It wasn’t until 2007 did the Aggies decide on their current look of maroon helmets with a heavier embossed logo. A&M honored victims of a 1999 bonfire that killed 12 students in 2009 with a special ribbon decal on its helmets against Texas.
