Back to the College Football Uniforms
Wake Forest has gone with its black helmet “WF” logo look for the last 20 years in Winston-Salem, donning black tops and gold pants throughout for home games. Jazzing it up a bit, the Demon Deacons have worn alternate gold jerseys and even incorporated black pants into the get up in recent years, but the traditional swatch of black and gold hasn’t set Wake Forest apart from the rest of the ACC.
Wake’s cleanest current look is its road white top-black pants combination. The traditional “WF” is prominently displayed on each shoulder and black numerals are outlined in gold. On the dark pants, a thin gold strip descends from hip to knee along the side. In all, the Demon Deacons currently have three different pants colors and three separate tops they can choose from.
The Demon Deacons are one of many Nike-sponsored teams in need of a swoosh revamping. The historic “WF” logo appears outdated compared with current fonts and letter-marked decals. The one detail that’s interesting on current jerseys is the diamond-shaped side panel. Whether Wake wears white, black or gold tops, opposite colors are shown at the ribcage creating a trendy look.
From 1993-00, Wake Forest’s “WF” helmet decal had white lettering wrapped in gold. In 2001, the Demon Deacons dropped white from their helmets and transitioned into the metallic gold “WF” logo. Without a stripe, the black shell-black facemask-black chinstrap look appears dull on gamedays, but nice when paired with the rare all-black uniforms.
Wake football played in white helmets over a three-year span in the mid 1970s, but has played in a black shell since 1976.
Incorporating a new alternate gold helmet, perhaps decorated with a sleek “Demon Deacon” decal, would be appealing. Wake last donned metallic shells in 1972.
