What will Nike and the Hurricanes cook up next?
Tulsa has donned just about every swoosh template available since the 2009 season, transitioning from looks heavy on piping and stripes to two-toned shoulders. Like a handful of other teams in the Division I ranks, Tulsa’s current home and road options are two different templates.
At home, the Golden Hurricanes don royal blue tops with red and gold accents while the road jersey is white with blue shoulders and numerals. Tulsa has white, gold or blue pants and debuted an all-yellow alternate in 2009.
In 2011, the Hurricanes were bold enough to don a carbon fiber style light blue shell with a yellow and red “TULSA” wordmark on one side and oversized numerals on the other. It didn’t match the team’s royal blue accents in the least and was the first time the Golden Hurricanes had worn non-gold helmets since 2009, but sparked a collection of new shell stickers and colorways.
Since 2008, Tulsa has worn more than 13 different helmet styles, rivaling Oregon and Virginia Tech in the headgear department. The program’s first white lid since the 1960s — with a stripe composed of hurricane warning flags — returned during a game against UAB in 2012.
Over the last decade, Tulsa’s eye-catching apparel has risen to a new level with the swoosh and is respected as one of the Conference USA’s best-looking teams on the field. It appears Nike keeps a close eye on the private university in Oklahoma since the Golden Hurricanes are receptive to almost any uniform risk.
