Back to the College Football Uniforms
The Thundering Herd are one of the last teams to do away with heat-press numbers, moving to black-threaded sewn-on numerals after the 2009 season. That switch included slightly rounded edges to the program’s “M” on the helmet, but nothing further. Kelly green jerseys and white pants with a white helmet has been Marshall’s calling card since 1993.
During Marshall’s first season in the Division IA ranks in 1997, the Thundering Herd’s uniforms featured a pint-sized “M” at the crest of jerseys. The following season, Marshall debuted its all-green look for home games of national relevance.
Nike’s logo first started appearing on Marshall’s uniforms in 2001 during the Byron Leftwich era.
Marshall brought back green helmets for two contests in 2008 after a 23-year hiatus. Three years later, the swoosh supplied the Thundering Herd with their current retro-style design with a lighter shade of green. Marshall’s “HERD” wordmark has been replaced with a modernized “THE HERD” phrase across the chest. At the left hip of pants, the program’s secondary bison head of a green M design can be seen.
The graphic first appeared in 2001 when Marshall began incorporating black accents within its logos.
We’ve yet to see an all-black alternate uniform style however.
